Schools host science and math events to beat the winter blues
Several district schools closed out the month of January with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)-themed events for their students and families. The recent events included a STEM night at Garden City Elementary, a math night at Zanewood Community: A STEAM School, and a science and engineering night at Palmer Lake Elementary.
Palmer Lake received a grant from community partner Boston Scientific to host a science and engineering night event for its students and families on Jan. 28. The event included many different hands-on activities for visitors to explore, such as building mini-catapults, circuit making, rainbow glasses, crafting gliders, different building materials and more.
Garden City’s STEM night on Jan. 23 was also sponsored by Boston Scientific. The Works Museum in Bloomington brought in a variety of different activities, including Wedgits, mini-catapults, super stick structures that participants built in team challenges, circuit making and rainbow glasses.
Zanewood Community’s math night was put on thanks to a partnership among Boston Scientific, the Northwest Suburban Integration District and the school’s Title 1 program. It included activities such as bee bots, visits from local robotics teams, virtual reality headsets and a variety of math game stations. All events also included dinner for families to enjoy at either very low or no cost.
